The Cassandra Project was made during the artist residency Salem2Salem at Salem Art Works in August 2019. My idea was to use the New York Times as the starting point of the work about the news and the Greek priestess Cassandra.* I began making collages from the newspaper and these became painting over the newspapers. The titles of the paintings are pulled from the headlines from the day the collage was made (August 1 – 7th.) The remaining newspapers were used to make a large paper and steel sculpture. It was shown at the Railroad Gallery in Salem, NY at the end of the residency.
This piece was made in response to a mass shooting at Walmart in El paso Texas on June 3, 2019, followed by a mass shooting in Dayton Ohio on August 4, 2019.
